When I was in the 5th or 6th grade I was a real tomboy. I came home from school ready to run out the door for a good kickball game or bike riding adventure when my sister introduced me to a boy. I wasn’t sure why she was introducing me but I paused and said hello. I will never forget his first words to me…….”what a cute playsuit you have on”. At that point I really wasn’t sure what to think but thought my sister had lost her mind. Little did I know she would lose her head and heart and marry him!! But the big surprise was I also lost my heart and discovered that he wasn’t so bad…really quite a good guy!!
Love you, Marty!! Anne
Marty and the family were out on my sister Dee’s boat a few years ago…..and we were having our normal conversation about who was going to win that year for Pres. of our country.Well dumb me said “who ever catches the next leaf that is flying around(it was fall) will get the job” ! Before I could take a breath Marty had the leaf and Bush became Pres. that year…..I was teased for months on that one.I even got a fall leaf framed for Christmas that year! Love you Marty ….but still wish I had caught the leaf that day…lol
My family moved to our house in Fairfax when I was in the 1st grade and attending Oak View Elementary School. We stayed in that house until I graduated from James W Robinson Secondary School in 2003 and left 5 days later for the same Marine Corps boot camp on Parris Island that Marty attended in 1962. I bet my parents didn’t realize when we moved into that house that the Shantons were already living next door and would be lifelong friends. For me personally, Marty is like a second dad and a mentor who was always looking out for me and still today he’s always making sure I’m making the right decisions. The Shantons gave me my first job working as an office clerk at their Insurance Brokerage firm after school. I still remember telling Marty that I was going to join the Marine Corps and his reply was… “You’re not going the officer path!?! You’re too smart to go enlisted!” Marty felt so strong about that feeling that when I got out of the Marine Corps a few years later and was hired at the Marine Corps Association, the HR Director told me, “I had the greatest conversation with Mr. Shanton about you and he said his only regret was…” (you catch my drift).
It is a privilege to know Marty and Susan and I love them very much! So glad we stopped by to visit yesterday and get a thumbs up of approval from Marty.
On April 30th 2012 Marty Shanton lost his fight with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). He was a loving husband, an amazing father, grandpa, coach known as grumpy grandpa. Marty is a warrior and fought with passion until the end, truly courageously demonstrating his life long motto of “Attitude Determines “Altitude”.
Beloved husband of Susan Shanton, loving father of Greg Shanton(Sue), Derek Shanton(Gina), and Steve Shanton, Adoring grandfather of Noah, Connor, Gabi, and Bella. he is also survived by his brother John Shanton(Linda), Delia Roberts, and Donna Strama(Allan).
Marty Shanton lived his life helping others and his legacy lives on…
